Fundraiser set up to fund medical care for youngster

A LOVING mother and father are trying to raise money to pay for treatment for their three-year old son who has Cerebral Palsy.

Gill and Dan Phillips, of Micawber Avenue, Hillingdon, both 32, are trying to raise awareness about their son Kai, and find other parents in the same situation as themselves.

Kai was diagnosed at just six weeks old, but is still unable to walk or talk and requires round the clock care and attention.

Gill Phillips said: "I've not met one other person in the same situation as us and Kai, its quite lonely.

"I have found in Hillingdon there are not the support groups we would need, fortunately we have a great network of friends and family.

"Its traumatic, we have had to struggle with paying medical bills and mortage repayments, and we both have to work full time, so family help us out with looking after Kai during the day.

"I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like for a single parent in the same situation without a support network around them."

From last August, Kai began treatment at CPPC Ltd, in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, where he undergoes intensive physiotherapy to make him stronger, and they are hoping in time he will be able to sit unaided and gain full head control.

Now his parents are teaming up with their friends to set up a fundraiser for Kai to enable them to pay his £10,000 treatment, and in the future the family may even have to consider taking Kai to America for treatment.

On Saturday 31 October, Kai's family and friends are inviting members of the community to Dragons Health Club in Northolt and are hoping to sell 250 tickets.

A trust has also been set up in Kai's name as well as a website.

Charlotte Heanen, family friend, said: "They have had an incredibly tough three years since Kai was born.

"They are our best friends and to see what they have been through is heartbreaking, as we have a daughter the same age as Kai.

"Gill and Dan are surrounded by many friends and family who feel helpless a lot of the time which is why we are setting up the Kai Phillips Trust and the fundraising evening means we are all doing something to help and support Gill and Dan."

One of the things Mrs Phillips would like to see more of is parks in disabled facilities for children.

Rocket Park in Windsor Avenue, Hillingdon is full of disabled equipment, but she maintains all parks should follow this lead.

"I would like to see every park in the borough have at least one piece of equipment for disabled children."
