Goulds Green Riding School celebrates 50th year

A RIDING school which has been run by a family for generations is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Gould Green Riding School, based in Goulds Green, off Harlington Road, Hillingdon, is now being run by the third generation of the Jupp family.

The centre now has 200 regular attendees, and was set up by Michael Jupp's parents when he was young.

Michael Jupp said: "Although running in a small way a few years earlier, we generally consider 1959 to be our first year.

"We still try to maintain a friendly atmosphere, and although health and safety issues are important we consider learning to ride should be an enjoyable and fun experience."

Mr Jupp took over the running of the school when his parents retired and has now himself handed over the reins to his daughter Katie, 21, who teaches at the school.

"There have been many changes over the years, the surrounding roads are busier, and much of the open land we used to ride on has been developed.

"However, we are fortunate to have had Stockley Country Park developed adjacent to our stables which offers several miles of prepared bridle paths and two huge menages where both complete beginners and more advanced riders can ride in safety."

The successful completion of the riding school's fifth decade in business has also seen them featured in the prestigious Horse and Hound magazine.

Mr Jupp added: "One unfortunate change however is that over the years there has been a slight increase in charges, in 1959 a half hour ride cost two shillings and sixpence (equivalent to 12 and a half pence) and five shillings (25p) per hour."

The club will be holding a number of events to mark their 50th anniversary including a show, open day, pony club event, and re-union party, and are hoping to make contact with any former clients.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all clients both past and present for their support over the years and hope we have been successful in making your horse riding a pleasant experience."

The British Horse Society is only aware of a small number of schools that have been operating as long as Gould Green.
