Swakeleys Townswomen's Guild- club report
SWAKELEYS EVENING TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD
Members provided a variety of food for a party, at the meeting hall to celebrate the Guild's 52nd Birthday in March Raffle Prizes for all and a quiz to keep brains active, helped to ensure that a happy evening was enjoyed by all. The annual general meeting took place in April. Mrs Margo Holman, Secretary read a resume of events of the past year, and new president Mrs Peggy Hallett, received her chain of office.
Retiring president was Mrs Joyce Richardson. A Beetle drive was held in May amid the usual hilarity why do some members make sure hard work of throwing a six? Prizes were awarded to the lucky winners in June, Mr Graham Mears gave an interesting account of his work with the Bucks search and rescue team, and earned respect for all the long hours and hard work. In 'Fun with Threads' at the July meting, Mrs Joan Hazel showed her enthusiasm for all sorts of needlework. Her talk explained how her classes for children encouraged them to enjoy sewing. Samples of tiny embroidered butterflies and shoes were passed around and admired. August was the month for programme planning.
Suggestions were put forward to next year's speakers and events whilst members enjoyed cheese and biscuits. The cooks and gardeners of the Guild had a chance to display the results of their labours at September's produce show. Classes for all sorts of vegetables, fruit and flowers were judged as usual by Mr Jim Gooch, who once again gave helpful comments and advise. Two non cooking members had the enviable task of testing the cakes and jams - it is not known how often they found it necessary to return for another taste before pronouncing judgement. The Guild's social studies group had another successful season with scrabble sessions, quizzes, poetry reading and time to tell one another about recent holidays and trips abroad.
Several Groups within the Guild have dined out at local restaurants. Two members visited the flower festival at Westminster Abbey where they were able to admire the Townswomen's guild entry, made in guild colours, green, violet and white.
Events arranged at Ealing Town Hall, by West Middlesex Federation have been attended and enjoyed but no luck for Swakeleys in this year's quiz.
The guild meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. At the meeting Hall, Long Lane, Hillingdon. Anyone who would like to join and take part in next years events would be very welcome.
